PRESS RELEASE from Courtney Fine
This year marks my family’s tenth consecutive Boston Marathon on behalf of MGHfC. My husband, Ryan, and I have run together and taken turns in order to support a cause that is so very near to our hearts. We have three daughters, 19, 16 and 13. When our youngest daughter was born, she had medical complications. This was a complete surprise and shock to us. At only hours old, a medical transport team arrived at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, to bring our newborn to MGH for specialized care. This was an extremely stressful and scary time for our family.
Sitting in the NICU the day after our daughter was born, I remember looking up at a sign on the wall, a plaque of dedication to the NICU from another family that had felt the love and care we did during these hard days. I remember saying to Ryan, we will find a way to give back to a place that has always been there for our family. A year later, I applied to run for MGH, and we haven’t stopped our support.
Being ten years into this journey, we have a village of family and friends who show up each year to support us in countless ways. Our girls are just as involved in the process as Ryan and I, and each year ask how can we help, what are our fundraisers going to be. We feel fortunate to have this story to tell and continue to run for a cause we believe in so deeply. Over the last ten years, we have had several friends whose children have faced pediatric cancer, so our giving back began with the birth of our daughter, but it has evolved into so much more. We continue to run for the same patient partner, Nikki, whose family is now considered “family” to us. This year, we will also be running for a ten year old, who is the strongest, most resilient fighter we have ever met.
We are honored to be a part of MGHfC marathon team once again this year! We run with passion for MGH every year!
