Hockey, Basketball Teams on Track for State Tourney Spots
Track teams will be at a Championship meet this afternoon, as the wrestling, hockey, and basketball teams regroup for this week's games.
It was a busy weekend in Red Devils athletics, and the week ahead will be just as active.
The boys' basketball team put up a good fight against Winchester on Friday but ultimately fell to the Red and Black by a score of 55-45. The girls won their game 51-30. The girls then played Manchester Regional in a non-league game on Sunday and scored an exciting 47-46 win supported by Savanna Scali's 3-pointer with 8.9 seconds left on the clock. The JV girls won their matchup too, 43-23.
The hockey teams both lost to Woburn on Saturday; boys fell 6-1 and girls 3-1. The wrestling team fought hard in their quad meet this weekend, with wins by McElroy and Gong and pins by Bonnell, Shvartsman, Leavitt, and Tonani, but brought home losses to Marlboro (46-33), Oliver Ames (43-34), and Silver Lake (66-12).
It's looking like all our basketball and hockey teams will earn spots in the MIAA state tournament, which begins in late February. Currently, the rankings are as follows: boys' basketball #16; girls' basketball #29; boys' hockey #17; girls' hockey #11. The top 32 have guaranteed spots in the state tournament.
Today, the boys' and girls' track teams will be at the Middlesex League Junior Varsity Championship Meet this afternoon at the Track at New Balance.
