Good Morning, Burlington!

In a moment when many members of our community are still grappling with the events that soured a day intended for the celebration of joy and love for the LGBTQ+ community, middle school families received another note yesterday, indicating there was some antisemitic and homophobic graffiti in one of the bathrooms. School officials say they aren’t at liberty to share much information, but claim they don’t believe Friday’s demonstration and Tuesday’s graffiti are related.

Related or not, the demonstrations of intolerance are concerning, leaving many community members frustrated and wondering what consequences students who engage in these actions face and how to prevent similar situations in the future.

Also in school news, I wanted to clarify that the School Committee Subcommittee meeting today is not a full meeting of the SC—at this meeting, the 10th grade students who created the survey about full- versus half-day professional development days will present their results to Dr. Conti and a couple School Committee members. I’ll update you on this conversation when I know more!

Finally, there will be an open house at the Burlington Museum at the corner of Bedford St. and Cambridge St. on Saturday from 11-2. This coincides perfectly with the Pride celebration on the Common, and it’s right across the street—so come and have fun with our LGBTQ+ community & allies and learn about our fair town, in its 225th year of incorporation, while you’re at it.

• 1:00 PM - School Committee Subcommittee to hear from the 10th grade civics students who created that survey that so many of you amazing people completed! I won’t be able to attend, but I will definitely keep people posted with a summary afterward. (BHS)
• 6:30 PM - Improper Bostonians with The History Project (library event): Drawing on sources like court cases, diaries, letters, photographs, videos, oral histories, and more, host Joan Ilacqua will take you through over 400 years of history, from romantic friendships to Boston marriages, the gay liberation front to marriage equality and beyond.
• 7:00 PM - Teen Event: Pride Party (library event; Register)
• 7:00 PM - Land Use Committee will hear about the MBTA Communities law, discuss the Winn View Heights II proposal, which will be back on the Select Board’s agenda soon, and get updates on the Mall Road and Blanchard/Wheeler Road revisioning. (Town Hall and virtual)

Sports and Activities

I didn’t get the tennis game into yesterday’s Buzz, but the boys won it, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 win over Reading. The MSTCA Decathlon championship concluded yesterday after two days at the BHS track. Senior Elijah Wolinski defended his championship (after graduating on Sunday!), and the team took 3rd overall. Congrats, athletes!
