Retrospective: A Big Year for Shawsheen Tech
As the seniors celebrate their graduation and the rest of the students and teachers prepare to pack it in for the year, Shawsheen Valley Technical High School has many accomplishments to reflect upon.
Many students received state and national honors:
- Jayden Donaher was named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2023.
- Eighty-six seniors were awarded the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship for academic achievement.
- More than a hundred students were recognized with citizenship awards.
- Many students earned medals in the SkillsUSA District Competitions in such areas as drafting, health assisting, and more.
- Burlington senior Reagan Bowden was named Senior of the Month and female Athlete of the year for her leadership on and off the volleyball court and softball field.
The hard work of staff was recognized as well:
- Librarian Katie McGinness received a President's Award by the Massachusetts School Library Association, continuing her reputation as an inclusive and innovative educator.
- Academic Director, Danica Johnston, was recognized at the Education 2.0 Conference with an Outstanding Leadership Award; she was the only vocational administrator recognized at the conference.
- World language teachers are collaborating with other technical school teachers to reimagine the way world languages are taught in vocational settings and are applying for additional grant funding to make this idea a reality.
Shawsheen Tech provides the opportunity for technical education to high school students from Burlington, Bedford, Billerica, Wilmington, and Tewksbury. As the year comes to a close, the Buzz congratulates Shawsheen students and teachers for their many accomplishments and wishes all a safe and relaxing summer.
