Daily Buzz | BHS School Building Committee Approves RFP at First Meeting
Also, don't miss two Truck Day opportunities
Good Morning, Burlington, and welcome to those of you who are joining us for the first time after signing up at yesterday’s Beer Garden. What a fun evening!
Just a reminder that tonight on the Town Common, you and your family and friends can take advantage of a sensory-friendly Truck Day. This time is set aside for folks who love looking at and learning about heavy equipment but don’t love the loud noises and big crowds of Truck Day. More details below.
Also this evening is the Burlington Womenade Ice Cream Social I mentioned in yesterday’s Buzz.
High School Building Committee Approves RFP
The High School Building Committee met for the first time last night to organize and to approve the request for proposals RFP for an Owners Project Manager (OPM) to conduct a $1.5 million feasibility study for the high school.
The School Department has appealed to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for funds to renovate or rebuild the high school for the past 13 years, and each year they’ve been denied. (This is the reason they applied for aid to rebuild Fox Hill, which they are in line to receive, but that is a story for another day.)
While the MSBA hasn’t accepted BHS into its program, the need for work on the high school hasn’t gone anywhere, and last year the School Department requested that Town Meeting appropriate funds to perform a feasibility study on the campus. This study will look at the existing site and structures to determine the best course of action to ensure the next generation of students has a school that meets their needs.
The School Committee also voted to create a School Building Committee for the high school that follows the process required by MSBA. That way, though we’re starting the process as town-funded, we can slip seamlessly into the MSBA program if they do end up accepting BHS down the road.
Last night’s meeting was to review the Request for Proposals, a required document that will be released and advertised to attract bids from experienced firms who are interested in performing the feasibility study. The proposals will be reviewed the week of October 16, and interviews will be conducted the week of November 2.
