You might have noticed signs of construction along Route 3A/Cambridge Street, especially if you've been up the road into Billerica. The repaving project between Pinehurst Ave. in Billerica and Burlington High School has been underway for a couple of months now and, according to the state, the road work on Cambridge Street is 2% complete.

The Town of Billerica website informed its residents back in April that sidewalk, driveway, and ramp improvements would happen this spring, with traffic light upgrades to happen later this year and the actual milling, surfacing, and striping to occur in 2025.

Many residents had opinions about this project when it was first being discussed; some disagreed with the installation of bike lanes, while others insisted we need more dedicated, buffered bike lanes to ensure safe travel for the duration of Route 3A. There was also concern over the restriping of the road, as many use the wide one-lane portions of the road as a two-lane road; the state and many residents hold that clearly marking when there is one lane versus two will create safer conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Residents were also concerned that the traffic studies completed to support the plan were conducted during periods of much lower-than-normal traffic. Representatives from the state assured concerned individuals by saying portions of the study had been completed before the pandemic; they also completed an additional study and revised the plans for the project prior to finalizing it.

Road work on Cambridge Street will be happening for the next year or two, so be sure to give yourself a little extra time
