As Burlington approaches its local election, longtime Board of Health member Ed Weiner is once again seeking re-election. With an extensive background in medical science and a deep commitment to public health, Weiner has dedicated nearly four decades to improving Burlington’s quality of life.
Weiner holds a Ph.D. in medical science with a focus on hematology. He has lived in Burlington for 38 years and has served on the Board of Health for 36 of those years. As he enters his 13th term, he is eager to continue his service, bringing his expertise and passion for community health into the next phase of Burlington’s development.
Weiner is proud of the transformation he has helped bring to Burlington’s public health infrastructure. When he first joined the Board of Health, the Health Department consisted of only four employees. Over the years, he has worked to expand its scope, adding professionals and expertise to address environmental, health, and safety concerns.
One of his key achievements has been supporting Burlington’s evolution into a hub for biotechnology and life sciences. He recognized the potential for growth in this field a decade ago, he said, and advocated for bringing biotech companies to the town in a way that ensured public health and safety. Today, Weiner said, Burlington is home to over 21 biotech and life science organizations, as well as a national university, a regional medical school, and a global medical center.
Weiner has also played a pivotal role in environmental clean-up efforts. Burlington, once home to industrial and electronic manufacturing, had numerous contaminated sites left over from past decades. Under his leadership, the Board of Health has worked diligently to identify and remediate these areas, ensuring a safer environment for residents. "There are communities all over this this country that are just identifying their contamination.," he said. "We've identified it all and we cleaned it all up ... I said in my lifetime this community would be clean, and I think it's going to happen."
Looking ahead, Weiner emphasizes the need for the Board of Health to continue adapting to the evolving public health landscape. He envisions a continued focus on public health and safety, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. Communication, he says, is a key area for growth for the Board of Health, the Health Department, and the town at large in order to ensure residents feel heard and informed about health initiatives and policies.
Weiner's overarching goal remains the same: to make Burlington a safe, healthy, and welcoming community for residents and visitors alike. “The Board of Health touches every person in Burlington every day,” Weiner stated, and he appreciates the opportunity to be a part of that work.
For Weiner, serving on the Board of Health is not just a duty—it’s a passion. A former college professor and pharmaceutical executive, he turned down career advancement opportunities that would have required him to leave Burlington. Instead, he chose to stay and invest his time and expertise in the community he loves.
“I get up every morning and think about what I can do to help this community be better,” he said. “It’s a labor of love.”
As Election Day approaches on April 5, Weiner hopes to continue his legacy of leadership and service, ensuring that Burlington remains at the forefront of public health and environmental safety.
