Daily Buzz | Waste Removal Contract Public Hearing Postponed
And a retrospective on the weekend's events
Good morning!
Enough people emailed me about yesterday’s photo that I looked it up, and apparently it’s an evening primrose and the goldfinches love it. (I don’t love the goldfinches, because they ate every single strawberry my garden yielded this year, but they are pretty to look at.) Learn something new every day.
Weekend recap
This weekend I was lucky enough to make it out to a few of the events with my oldest daughter, while Baby Buzz stayed home.
Badges and Bases
This was a super fun softball game against our firefighters and police officers. There were a few errors on the field, but both teams had some very powerful hitters and it was a high-scoring game. After one inning FD was up 2-0, but PD quickly tied it up. Soon after, FD was up 6-3, but then PD surpassed them to make it 9-6. The final score was a 12-12 tie!
Proceeds from this event benefitted Mama Bear Effect, a Burlington-based nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child sexual abuse.
Diwali
Diwali is a festival of lights that symbolizes the protection of the spirit from darkness and coincides with the Hindu New Year. During the five days of celebration, those who celebrate leave a row of clay lamps outside their homes. Here’s a quick snapshot from a website that describes how Diwali might be celebrated. There are regional variations, but the common theme is the triumph of good over evil.
Burlington’s Diwali celebration left the Common awash in colors yesterday; vendors of all ages were set up to sell everything from food to handmade artwork to beautiful, brightly-colored textiles. Attendees were treated to a lovely and energetic show as dancers paid tribute to traditional song and dance.
Diwali falls at the end of the lunar month Ashwin and the beginning of Kartika; as it is a lunar holiday, it’s on a different date every year. This year, the official festival will begin on October 25.
Today in Burlington
The public hearing regarding our waste removal contract, which is up next year and needs to be renegotiated, was supposed to occur tonight at Select Board; it’s been rescheduled to October 24.
Only one meeting on the agenda today:
- 6:00 - Select Board will approve some appointments, including a special police officer and two DPW employees. They’ll also discuss the fine structure for violation of water restrictions and a possible change to the rate structure for irrigation water during a drought. Additionally, they’ll discuss using Disability Access Commission funds to make our town website more accessible and talk about succession planning for the Fire Chief and DPW Director. (Join online)
Sports
Last Week’s Scores
In Friday soccer: JV boys lost at Melrose 1-2; Varsity girls took a 0-1 loss and JV lost 1-5. Varsity boys fell 2-0 on Saturday against Wakefield.
Today’s Schedule
Believe it or not, there is nothing on the sports schedule for today. Keep an eye out tomorrow for some volleyball and soccer.
Have a lovely day, Burlington!
