Hello and Happy Monday, Burlington!

The election is over, but there are still open seats for Town Meeting in Precincts 2 (1 seat), 4 (3 seats), and 7 (1 seat). If you’re still uncertain what Town Meeting does, it is the town’s legislative body. The main functions are to approve operating budgets and capital requests and to approve new bylaws and changes to existing ones. More than any executive body, Town Meeting Members have visibility into the financial activities and priorities of all departments around town and have a say in setting the vision of what our town values (and therefore funds).

When there is an open seat in local government, the other members of that body (or precinct, in the case of Town Meeting) convene to fill it by appointment until the next election. If you are interested in filling one of the seats for Town Meeting, first consult this precinct map to be sure of your precinct, then look at the open seats, and finally contact Amy Warfield at the Town Clerk’s office to notify her of your intentions.

More about Town Meeting here.

*EDIT: Someone rightly pointed out that write-ins aren’t included in preliminary results. So, maybe there won’t be as many seats to fill by appointment. If so, that’s great! I’ll be sure to keep you posted when I know who earned seats by write-in.
