Daily Buzz | Precinct 3 Town Meeting Members to Appoint New Member
And a quick primer on May Town Meeting
Good Morning, Burlington!
This afternoon there is a meeting to fill a vacant seat in Precinct 3. You might remember that there were no open seats, according to the ballot, after the election. You might also remember that there was an open seat before the ballot was set. According to Town Clerk Amy Warfield, nobody pulled papers for that one-year open seat and it was left off the ballot.
While other open seats were mostly filled by write-ins, this seat now needs to be filled by appointment. Here’s how the process works: The existing Town Meeting Members in Precinct 3 will convene this evening. At that meeting, those TMMs have the option of nominating someone(s) to fill the open seat. Then the members will vote. The winner of that vote will move on to fill the seat until the next election (which also happens to be the end of this seat’s term).
By the way, this process unfolded on Monday evening in Precinct 4. One seat needed a tiebreaker vote, and another needed to be filled due to a late resignation. The winner of the tiebreaker was Kevin Spielberger; the person appointed to fill the vacant seat until the next election was Becky Norum.
After today, Town Meeting should have a full complement of members. That leaves plenty of time for everyone to settle in with the warrant for the May 8 Town Meeting, which is now posted in draft form on the Town Clerk’s website.
May Town Meeting, you might recall, is the big budget meeting (also known as the Annual Town Meeting) and is the reason Ways and Means (our town’s finance committee) has been meeting with each department and running through their budgets for the past several months.
While the meeting is scheduled for May 8, it will definitely roll longer than that. When Town Meetings need to be extended, they go to Wednesday of the same week and then Mondays and Wednesdays until the entire warrant has been worked through. I’ve blocked it out, but I am pretty sure last year’s May TM went 4 days. Learn more about Town Meeting in the Buzz Profile.
