Daily Buzz | Burlington Police Department to Lead Training on Protecting Houses of Worship

Good Morning, Burlington!

Remember to set out your trash barrels tonight or tomorrow morning, as waste collection is delayed due to the Monday holiday.

Yesterday, Town Clerk, Amy Warfield, sent out the dates of 2024’s Town Meetings to help Town Meeting Members plan when possible for in-person attendance. Throw these on your calendar now, so you can stay informed as they come up next year:

  • January 22 (& 24 if needed)
  • May 13 (and 15/20/22 if needed—remember this is the big budget meeting that usually takes multiple sessions)
  • September 23 (& 25 if needed)

Additionally, don’t forget about these ongoing events:

  • The Community Health Equity Survey is still open. Don’t forget to fill it in to ensure our town’s Department of Public Health has the appropriate resources to meet the needs of its residents.
  • The Pumpkin Patch is open at St. Mark’s, and proceeds benefit People Helping People. Pick up your pumpkins and carve, paint, or otherwise decorate them—then send your photos to the Buzz to be included in our pumpkin gallery!
  • If you attend a varsity athletics event this month, please bring with you some nonperishables and personal care supplies to help the food pantry meet their clients’ needs this season. Here’s a list of the current needs:

Take a look at these other upcoming events, and if you find something that piques your interest, put it on your calendar now!

Burlington Police Department to Lead Training on Protecting Houses of Worship

On October 20, the Burlington Police Department will be hosting a training for stakeholders in keeping houses of worship safe and secure. This is a full-day, multifaceted offering with different sessions, applicable to different job functions, to choose from:

  • Session 1 - basic security concepts and response to an active threat (for faith leaders & professionals)
  • Session 2 - de-escalation and mental health support/response (for faith leaders & professionals)
  • Session 3 - de-escalation and response to active threat for volunteers/informal staff such as ushers and greeters

This training is capped at 100 participants due to the capacity of the venue, so be sure to register your organization and its members as soon as you can.

It hurts my heart that we are in a time and place in the world where we have to be worrying about these kinds of things, but we have seen over and over that unexpected events happen and the more prepared we are to respond, the better the outcome. It is my sincere hope that, if the unthinkable ever does happen, those involved can be as prepared as possible to protect their sacred place and its members and visitors.

Sports and Activities

The Monday holiday tricked me, and I forgot to list the swim meet and Jr. Devils football game that happened yesterday. Our middle school football team beat Arlington 36-0, bringing their record to 5-0, and while the girls fell to Belmont 103-67 at their swim meet, they had one sectionals-qualifying run (Ryley McCarthy with a 5:56:53 in the 500 Freestyle event) and brought in some great donations for the food pantry.

Also yesterday: The golf team won against Wilmington 41-31, while boys lost their soccer game against Woburn by a score of 0-3.

Today our field hockey team hosts Stoneham at BHS, with the varsity team playing at 4:15 and JV playing at 5. There’s also a freshman boys’ soccer game at Rahanis on the calendar (opponent TBA).

Thanks for reading today. Have a lovely day!
