Burlington Uses Green Communities Competitive Grant to Upgrade Town Hall & Annex

The Town of Burlington was designated a Green Community in early 2020 and has been utilizing grants to upgrade facilities through the Town, including schools.

In the fall of 2022, the Town applied for a competitive grant with Green Communities and was awarded $127,078. With this grant funding, the Town was able to upgrade the weatherization at Town Hall and the Town Hall Annex. Though the project was awarded in March 2023, due to unforeseen delays, the project did not begin until December 2023.

Both buildings were stripped of their current insulation and had new insulation blown in to keep with the current stretch code regulations. New plywood attic hatches were then installed to ensure no unwanted air escaped through to the employees and visitors. These efforts are designed to help the Town reach its goal of a 20% reduction in energy by the end of 2025. Prior to this project completion, the Town had achieved a 13.6% reduction.

Guidelines set forth by the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) state that all buildings shall be weatherized prior to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) improvements. The DPW has future plans to replace the individual heating units and shared chiller at the Town Hall and Town Hall Annex in the next few years.
