At this week's Select Board meeting, Member Sarah Cawley gave a number of infrastructure and construction updates on behalf of the Department of Public Works:

  • Keep an eye out for heavy water main flushing later this month. This process is usually completed in the spring, but the Department is trying out late summer flushing in an attempt to improve water quality.
  • The Cambridge Street/Route 3A project is ongoing and will continue through next year. By the end of this construction season, the state expects to complete paving in Billerica, from Pinehurst Ave. up to the Burlington line, and sidewalks up to Pontos. There will be no road paving in Burlington this year, but the project is expected to pick back up in the spring.
  • Francis Wyman Road is in the process of repaving, and the work is expected to be done by the end of this month. Avoid lengthy delays by finding an alternate route during working hours.
  • The Simonds Park lower lot is also undergoing resurfacing.
  • Work is underway to install sidewalks on Blanchard Road in accordance with a half-million dollar grant that was awarded to the town in early 2023. This Complete Streets grant adds much-needed pedestrian access to the area from South Bedford Street to Muller Road.
  • Construction on the Grandview Ave pump station is underway; funds were appropriated by Town Meeting this May to rebuild this 54-year-old structure and prevent it breaking down and causing very messy problems for the surrounding area.
