Hive Roundup #15: Election Settled; Fill Out Communication Survey
Also, Beautify Burlington month is still underway
Hello and Happy Weekend, my Buzzy Little Bees!
It’s been two weeks, so it’s high time for a roundup and there’s no shortage of things to talk about. So, let’s dive right in!
Election & Government News
Election Results are final and appointments have been made to address the remaining empty seats.
In Precinct 4, there were enough write-ins to fill the seats that didn’t have candidates running for them. There was a tie for the final seat, which Kevin Spielberger won by vote at a meeting of most (14, I think) of the 18 Precinct 4 representatives on Monday. There was another seat vacated late, and Becky Norum was elected to that one.
For one 1-year Precinct 3 seat, no one returned their nomination papers by the deadline and the seat was left off the ballot. A special meeting of 11 P3 reps selected Rich DiBona to fill that spot.
The good news is that there were multiple candidates for each of these appointments. The bad news is that only the 18 Precinct representatives can vote on these positions when they come open after the election. The ideal situation would be for all seats to have eligible candidates, competing for them during the general local election, and for any resignations to occur before the nomination papers open up. I will be sure to remind everybody of this throughout election season next year.
- Speaking of Town Meeting, the warrant has been set, and you can find it here. May TM is the big budget meeting, and it will be a multi-day meeting.
- Finally, in town government news, the General Bylaw Review Committee has been making their rounds to gather information about how best to form articles for the September town meeting that create a home rule petition for the town of Burlington to allow hybrid access to municipal meetings and waive the requirement for having an in person quorum. We will certainly hear more about this in the months to come.
School News
- The first day of school next year will be 30 August. Two different calendars are currently being developed, one with school on Good Friday, and one with students and teachers having Good Friday off.
- The Mock Trial team has been around for four years, and from the very beginning they have been competitive. They collaborate well and support each other, and for the last 2 years have gone 3-0 in the regular season, just missing qualifying for finals.
- We had 5 projects and 9 students qualify for the National History Day national competition, taking place at the University of Maryland in June. And their teacher, Ms. Barbara Sturtevant, was nominated for Teacher of the Year!
- Our robotics team, the DevilBotz, put up a good showing at Districts, ranking in the top 90 teams. They didn’t make it to playoffs, but were happy with the progress they made this season.
Community News and Involvement Opportunities
- Beautify Burlington is happening throughout April. As the weather gets warmer, consider setting aside some time to get outdoors and help make our community more beautiful! Stop by the Conservation Commission if you need to pick up supplies!
- I recorded a Parks and Recreation Podcast with Director, Brendan Egan! We talk a lot about the maintenance of Burlington’s many athletic fields.
- There is a unit available in Grandview Commons. It’s affordable senior housing, and the description is at the bottom of this note. Call 781-270-1600 or email for an application.
- The District area near the mall, Tuscan Kitchen, etc., is going through a revisioning. There will be some life science buildings but also (and more interesting) a river walk and green space!
- Thanks to your help, Burlington won the March Minute Madness challenge against local libraries. Congrats!
- Book Donation Day at the Library is today (Sunday, April 16) from 1:15-3:30!
- There have been at least two brush Fires in Burlington in as many weeks. Please stay safe and don’t light outdoor fires (or do anything that could accidentally start one) during Red Flag Days or when the weather is dry and windy.
- The town launched its Communication Survey and they really want to hear from you! Fill it out now; it’ll take 5-10 minutes.
- The second public meeting to discuss the vision of the Blanchard/Wheeler Corridor project will be held virtually at this address on April 26 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM.
In Other News
- A number of arrests were made in a prostitution sting this week.
