Volunteer to Teach Neighbors to Swim or Ride a Bike this Summer
This August, people with disabilities in the Burlington area have a unique opportunity to learn two skills that are essential for independence and safety, and you can volunteer to teach them.
According to iCan Shine, "the vast majority of people with disabilities never have the experience of independently riding a conventional two-wheel bicycle during their lifetime." Additionally, not knowing how to swim presents a danger to anyone who might find themselves around a pool or other body of water.
The Burlington Recreation Department's Therapeutic Recreation division is hoping to help local individuals with disabilities learn to swim and ride this summer by offering two special camps. Participants in the 5-day iCan Swim and iCan Bike programs benefit from instruction tailored to their specific needs, and by the end of the week the average participant has made great progress in their ability swim or ride.
These programs are volunteer-supported, and the Recreation Department needs your help to ensure this program is sufficiently staffed to run. Volunteer to teach the week of August 12 (biking) and/or the week of August 19 (swimming), and help a neighbor unlock a new achievement. There are a number of time slots available. To volunteer, please sign up for iCan Swim or iCan Bike online or call the Recreation Department at 781-270-1695.
If you or someone you know would like to participate in these iCan Shine programs, check eligibility requirements and sign up at the Recreation Department website.
