Daily Buzz | Five Tips for a Happy and Safe Halloween in Burlington

Good Morning, Burlington!

So many events this October have been centered around Halloween, and now the day is finally here! Make the most of Free Candy Day with these quick tips.

Five Tips for a Happy and Safe Halloween in Burlington

It seems most Halloweens are cold and wet, but not this one! The temps will feel chilly—especially jarring after the warmth of last week—but the skies look like they’ll be clear. Here’s how you and your family and friends can stay safe and content if you’re out trick-or-treating tonight.

  • Porch lights are the universal “We’re handing out free candy!” signal. If yours is on, expect some expectant youngsters to come a-knocking.
  • It gets dark on those neighborhood streets! Make sure to have a flashlight (or a few of them!), glow bracelets, and other ways to be seen in the dark, especially with dark costumes.
  • Hold on to your accessories and ensure tripping hazards such as long dresses are tied or pinned up.
  • Motorists and pedestrians, keep an eye out for one another! Drivers, don’t assume trick-or-treaters will move out of the way—they’re distracted by the full-size Twix bar they just scored, and by trying to figure out which of their friends is wearing the head-to-toe werewolf costume—and pedestrians, don’t assume drivers can see you.
  • If you are looking for something to do with your surplus candy, don’t forget that the Switch Witch likes to visit on Halloween after the littles are asleep to exchange candy for a gift—and, candy can be donated at multiple locations around town. We’ll share some locations soon!

Finally, today is your last day to pick up a pumpkin from the Burlington Pumpkin Patch. Like the Buzz’s Membership Drive in the month of November, proceeds from pumpkin sales go toward People Helping People. Even post-Halloween, pumpkins make great fall porch decorations!
