Daily Buzz | Council on Aging Seeks Part-Time Computer Teacher

Good Morning, Burlington!

Tickets become available today for the much-anticipated theatrical presentation, Diana of LOVE, which will be taking place at the library on January 19. Get your free ticket today, before they’re all gone!

Thanks to everyone who filled out the brief two-question survey yesterday. We will keep your suggestions in mind as we are putting the finishing touches on the Civic Expo! If you haven’t already, please take one minute to answer two questions for us! And, speaking of the Expo, please RSVP either within the Facebook event or by letting me know to expect you, so we can be sure to have good estimates for our refreshments (which are going to be really yummy!).

Council on Aging Seeks Part-Time Computer Teacher

Are you the person everyone in your family asks for computer help? Are you organized and thoughtful, able to meet learners where they are and patiently help them build their skills? This part-time position might be right for you.

The Burlington Council on Aging is seeking a computer teacher/tutor to work with seniors in small groups and one-on-one to develop technology literacy skills needed to use their tablets, laptops, and cell phones while minimizing frustration.

Starting with the basics, many students need support with turning devices on and off, connecting to the internet, creating an email address, connecting with their healthcare portal, and finding the information they need. Advanced class topics might include social media, gaming, downloading and deleting apps, customizing features, and staying safe online.

We are living in an increasingly online world, and seniors didn’t grow up in a world where you needed an email address just to communicate with your doctor’s office. You can help students develop these skills which, for better or worse, are no longer optional.

Patience and kindness are the most important qualifications for this position, and the ability to develop and teach an appropriate curriculum for this audience is also a must.

This is a grant-funded position, and the compensation is $50 per class. Please contact Council on Aging Director, Marge Yetman, by phone at 781-270-1950 or by email at myetman@burlington.org, for more information or to apply.

Sunday, January 7

  • I originally suggested a walk outdoors this Sunday, but it looks like we’ll be getting some significant snow, and so I’d like to revise my recommendation: Enjoy a book and a hot cocoa under a nice blanket as you listen to the scrape of the plows on the street. If you are outside clearing snow, be sure to check out the Winter Guide for snow shoveling tips from Slak Chiropractic to keep your back from getting bent out of shape.

Sports and Activities

The competition was tight, but Lady Devils squeaked by Winchester for a gymnastics win yesterday; the final event score was Burlington: 129.6, Winchester: 128.3, and Woburn: 122.6.

The boys’ swim team lost to Haverhill by a score of 85-69.

Today we’ve got basketball on the calendar, as our teams take on Melrose for a basketball series: JV boys and girls will be playing at 4:00 at Melrose Middle School and High School, respectively. The boys’ varsity team plays at Melrose at 5:45, and girls play at 7:30. The only home basketball game today is the freshman boys’ game, which will take place at 4:15 at Marshall Simonds Middle School.

Tomorrow we’ve got wrestling in Winchester at 9:00 AM. The boys’ hockey teams are also playing, with JV taking on Reading in an away game at 1:00 and varsity hosting Watertown at 2:15. There' will also be a freshman/sophomore track meet at Roxbury Community College’s Reggie Lewis Track.

On Sunday, the JV boys’ hockey team hosts Wakefield at 4:30.
