Good Morning, Neighbors!

It’s another Thursday in Burlington, but it’s not any old Thursday. Today, as you wake up, you can take great pride in knowing that your town has come out on top in the Minute Madness championship. That’s right, folks. Look in the mirror, and then step out onto the street. You’re looking at approximately 28,000 winners. Go ahead. Pat yourself on the back. Especially if you contributed minutes to the challenge. Way to go, Burlington!

Speaking of the library, they’ll be having a book donation day on April 16 from 1:15-3:30. They are also hosting a Fables & Fantasy book club featuring the book, Race the Sands, on April 19 at 7pm. Register here and start reading!

I wanted to point you, as well, to the preliminary election results, which have been posted on the Town Clerk’s Website. If you take a look, you’ll see that turnout actually increased to 15.31%. You’ll also note that several write-in candidates earned votes for the Town Meeting seats that weren’t filled by named candidates. If those write-in candidates accept their seats, we might not need any appointments, after all. There will be a meeting, though, for Precinct 4 representatives to break a tie; that meeting is scheduled for next Monday.

Finally, don’t miss tonight’s Historical Society Event, a talk with Matthew E. Henry, professor and poet/author of Teaching While Black, Dust & Ashes, and the Colored page.

• 6:00 PM - Shawsheen School Council will talk about student achievements and next year’s student handbook. (Shawsheen Tech)
• 6:00 PM - Ways and Means Committee - Subcommittee Local Education - Burlington District will review the 2024 budget for BPS, including the accommodated account out of which we pay for some special education services (See page 11 of this year’s budget for more information) and the capital warrant articles. (BHS and virtual)
• 6:30 PM - Planning Board (Town Hall and virtual)
• 7:00 PM - Historical Society Program with Matthew E. Henry. We will hear prose and poetry about his life journey from a black kid/ teacher in the city to doctoral studies. Doors at 6:30; the space is handicap accessible.

Sports and Activities

Boys and girls both lost their tennis games last night against Lexington. Softball came back from behind to bring home a 5-4 W against Reading, and the baseball team broke an 8th-inning tie to beat Reading 6-1.

The only thing on the sports calendar today is the Unified Coed Basketball game at 3:00. I can’t find any more information about that online, though. I would LOVE if someone could connect me with someone who can give me more information, though, so I can do a feature on this awesome activity!
