Community Celebrations: President's Day
A day to honor George Washington and all U.S. Presidents
The practice of remembering presidents past has been around since our very first president, George Washington. Following his death in 1799, the commemoration of his birthday on February 22 grew from an informal day of remembrance to a national holiday by 1885.
Then, in the 1960s, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was established in an effort to institute more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers and decrease employee absenteeism. At that point, Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12) was rolled in to the holiday, and it has been long known as Presidents’ Day.
In addition to a day to remember our nation’s past leaders, Presidents’ Day has become a popular retail holiday, with businesses from hardware stores to car dealerships holding sales. And, of course, in Massachusetts and other parts of New England, Presidents’ Day kicks off a week off for public school students and teachers.
