Ask Parks & Recreations Director, Brendan Egan, what his favorite season is, and he'll say winter, hands down. What makes the season so special? It's a time when families come together, he says. The kids come home from college, things slow down for just a moment (once the shopping is finished!), and the lights and music add ambience to make the days between Thanksgiving and New Year's stand out from the rest of the year.

In the spirit of the season, the Recreation Department holds a Tree Lighting celebration on the Burlington Town Common each December. Residents and visitors alike gather around and enjoy a fun and festive evening as they wait for the perfect moment. The crowd is led in a countdown, and then the entire Common is bathed in light. The area remains lit at night for the remainder of the year, providing a festive sight for all who come through the area.

This year, the 51st annual Burlington Tree Lighting will be happening on December 3, 2024. Festivities will begin at 4:00 with inflatables, hot cocoa, and other treats. Entertainment will be provided by  Colleen Nicholas Music Studios, and there will even be a visit from a certain big guy in red. The trees will be lit at 5:00, but the fun doesn't end there. The evening will cap off with a fireworks display.

Said Assistant Parks & Recreation Director Kelly Lehman, "We heard feedback from the community that the earlier the Common is lit up with festive lights, the better." She also said the idea of holding the event on a weeknight was well-received. "We’re hoping to build on the strong attendance last year," she said, "and attract even more Burlington families to join in the fun!"

The Buzz will see you on Tuesday, December 3, for a fun evening for the whole family.
