Weekly Buzz | Make a Plan to Attend the Civic Expo This Wednesday!
Also, service ideas for celebrating MLK Day
Good Morning, Burlington!
Town offices, schools, the library, and Buzz HQ are closed tomorrow in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., but that doesn’t mean a quiet week here in Burlington. In fact, it’s one of the busiest I’ve seen.
- Christmas tree collection will begin on Tuesday morning and run until they get all of them. This might take a few hours or a few days, so if you have a tree for pickup don’t forget to set it out by 7:00 on Tuesday morning. But before you do that, remove decorations and stands and cut in half trees longer than 6 feet.
- Trash will be delayed until Friday as a result of the holiday.
- If you’re looking for ideas for service activities to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King, you can check out the Day of Service and Learning in Cambridge, sponsored by Many Helping Hands 365, the Small Acts, Big Impacts activities at the Acton Discovery Museum, and this list of activities from WBUR’s Weekender Newsletter. Admission is also free at the MFA on Monday! (You’ll need a ticket.)
Make a Plan to Attend the Civic Expo This Wednesday!
The calendar this Wednesday is…well, it’s a hot mess. In addition to Governor Healey’s State of the Commonwealth Address, there is Kindergarten Information night, an open house at Shawsheen, an instrumental concert at MSMS, and the list goes on.
Amid the chaos, I hope you’ll make time to stop by the first-ever Burlington Civic Expo, sponsored by Burlington Buzz and the Town of Burlington. The evening is being finalized as we speak, and here are some details:
- Town departments, including the public safety departments, and officials from elected boards will be present to demonstrate what their department does, answer questions from the public, and get to know residents better. You’ll also have the opportunity to win door prizes!
- Town Meeting members will be mingling with the crowd, getting to know the constituents they represent.
- Local nonprofits will be there to share what they have to offer.
- Refreshments (water, decaf & regular coffee, crudité, charcuterie, and sweet treats) will be provided, thanks to our sponsors, Wegmans, Mom’s Organic Market, LaCascia’s, and Bagel Bar.
- Childcare will be provided on a limited basis in Room 207 so caregivers can enjoy the Expo. If you know you’ll be taking advantage of childcare, it would be helpful if you let us know at hello@burlington.buzz.
This is a drop-in event, so don’t feel like you need to be there for the entire two hours! Come, learn, and move along with your evening! We can’t wait to see you all.

Sports and Activities
Lady Devils Hockey shut out Wakefield 6-0 yesterday, bringing their record to 7-1. Boys lost their hockey game though, falling to Wakefield 2-1 in overtime; their record is now 4-5-1. The boys’ basketball team (now 5-5) beat Wakefield 80-65 on Friday, and the girls (1-8) lost their game 27-45. And, finally, the Lady Devils gymnasts won their meet against Melrose last week.
Today, the JV boys’ hockey team plays at Melrose at noon.
The holiday won’t deter our athletes tomorrow, as we have a variety of meetups throughout the day. Boys’ and girls’ track will host Wakefield at 1:00 at the Track at New Balance. The girls’ basketball teams will travel to Woburn for a 12:00 JV game and a 1:30 varsity game. And, finally, the boys’ hockey team will play in Brookline at 4:00.
That’s it for today. We’ll see you on Tuesday!
